Plain English

We aim to write our web pages in Plain English and avoid jargon.

Whilst we strive to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website. The following areas are known to us as falling outside of our intended web accessibility targets:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps data
  • YouTube embedded video player is not fully accessible for screen reader users
  • Videos are not always accessible for browsers that do not support iframes
  • Social media sites: Facebook, Flickr and Twitter
  • PDF documents

We will continue to investigate ways of improving the accessibility of these areas. We add accessibility tags to PDF documents and strive to make all documents as accessible as possible. We are aware however, that some older documents may not be completely accessible. To address this we are putting together an action plan to fully resolve accessibility issues with PDF documents.

We are also aware that some of our third party applications do not conform to the same levels of accessibility. We are working towards making these sites as accessible as possible.
